Damascus's landmarks by private car
Damascus is among the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, and UNESCO lists its ancient city, founded in the third millennium BC, as a World Heritage site. Its best-known landmarks sit inside and around the old city walls, and a car with a driver makes moving between them easier, especially for the elderly and families.
The Umayyad Mosque
The eighth-century Great Mosque of the Umayyads is a masterpiece of Umayyad architecture, built on a site previously occupied by a Roman temple and a Christian basilica. UNESCO describes it as one of the largest mosques in the world and one of the oldest sites of continuous prayer since the rise of Islam. Check entry arrangements before visiting.
Al-Hamidiyah Souq
The historic Damascus market is one of the city's best-known heritage shopping routes.
Azem Palace
UNESCO names Azem Palace among the city's major monuments, and the Damascus Chamber of Tourism presents it as a distinguished example of traditional Damascene architecture and craftsmanship. It adds residential architecture to the old city's mosques, khans and public baths.
The Citadel, city walls and gates
The present city walls and the Citadel survive from the Middle Ages, while the city keeps its Roman-era street plan, with remains of Roman gates and wall sections still visible. Check present access arrangements for each intended site before visiting.
Straight Street and Bab Touma
Straight Street is a historic axis through the heart of Old Damascus and its neighbourhoods. Bab Touma is a historic Damascene quarter known for its gate, streets and traditional houses.
Mount Qasioun
A panoramic viewpoint overlooking the city of Damascus. Check access arrangements before your visit.
Before you set out
Check entry arrangements and opening times on each destination's official channels on the day itself, and agree with the trip operator on the sites you want, their order and how long to stop at each.
